She still holds the world record in the heptathlon (7291 points) and is the American record holder in both the heptathlon and long jump (24-7). Jackie received the Jesse Owens Award in both 19. She also was named as the top American Athlete five times (1994, 1992, 1991, 19). On three different occasions (1994, 19), she was honored by Track & Field News as the World Athlete of the Year. Sports Illustrated for Women magazine named Jackie the Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century. In addition, she won a total of four gold medals (two in the heptathlon and two in the long jump) at three different World Championships and finished first in the long jump at the 1987 Pan American Games. In her final Olympic appearance at the 1996 Atlanta Games, she won the bronze medal in the long jump. She followed that up at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain by winning gold in the heptathlon and bronze in the long jump. Four years later, at the 1988 Games in Seoul, Korea, Jackie struck gold in both her signature events - the heptathlon (world record) and long jump. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, she won the silver medal in the heptathlon. She is further survived by her step-father, Gurdon Hamilton her brother, John (Deborah) Sjolinder her sister, Tracie (David) Fenske her niece, Erin (David) Turner and her great-niece and nephew, Lily and Emmet., Jackie is survived by her husband, Larry her daughters, Summer Brage, Katie (Thomas) Winters, and Amy (Joseph) Brage and her grandchildren, Bentley, Nova, Sierra, Carter, and Jax. Her laugh was infectious and will be remembered in our hearts forever. Her personality could light up the room and her sense of humor instilled laughter among those around her. Overall, Jackie will be remembered for her kindness and consideration for others, including her love of animals, especially cats. When Jackie wanted to get outside and relax, she found water specifically floating in an inner tube along the water. Other activities that Jackie enjoyed doing included wood burning, crocheting, and all-around crafting – you name it, she did it and loved it. Reading books was actually a great leisure activity for Jackie some of her favorites being novels written by Ray Bradbury and the novel “Forever Amber.” Additionally, she enjoyed science fiction novels and shows. She loved the people and loved the books. Once the children were grown and out of the house, Jackie found great joy in working at the Stevens Point Public Library. Every summer, she made sure the kids had fun and spent as much time outdoors as possible. She made it a high priority to be the best mom she knew how to be and worked hard to make sure she was present and involved in every aspect of their lives, especially the special events where she was front and center. Jackie was a proud and dedicated home maker, taking care of her husband and, as their family grew, their children. Shortly after high school, Jackie met Larry Brage and the two were married on Jat Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND. In 1975, she graduated from Mason City High School in Mason City, Iowa. Jackie was proud of her 1965 Opel Kadett the coolest car ever driven in Mason City and enjoyed driving her siblings around in it. Growing up she participated in Girl Scouts, played the flute in high school, and even volunteered at the local hospital as a candy striper. Jackie was born February 2, 1957, in Grand Forks, North Dakota the daughter of Edward and Luann (Manecke) Sjolinder. Jackie Lynn (née Sjolinder) Brage, of Stevens Point, passed away at home on August 13, 2023, at the age of 66, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.
